Shanghai Maglev Train

The Shanghai Maglev Train is the world’s first commercial high-speed maglev line and the only conventional high-speed maglev line in the world. It connects Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road Subway Station. It is 30.5 kilometers long and has a maximum speed of 431 kilometers per hour. It is currently one of the fastest land transportation vehicles in the world.

Maglev Train Shanghai China

A maglev train is a means of transportation that uses electromagnetic force to suspend the train on the track. It has no wheel-rail friction, so it can achieve very high speed and efficiency, while also reducing noise and energy consumption. The Shanghai Maglev Train uses the German TRANSRAPID technology and was jointly developed by Siemens and Frankfurt Airport.

It consists of 8 carriages, each of which can accommodate 100 passengers, and can carry a total of 800 passengers. Its design speed is 500 kilometers per hour, but the actual operating speed is currently 300 kilometers or 431 kilometers, depending on different time periods. Its operating hours are from 6:45 to 21:40 every day, with a train every 15 minutes or 20 minutes.

Maglev Train Inside Seats Shanghai

The construction of Shanghai Maglev started in December 2001, the main works were completed in December 2002, the trial operation started in December 2003, and it was officially opened to the public in January 2004. It is a major transportation project launched by the Chinese government in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and is also the result of cooperation between China and Germany in the field of high technology.

On July 2, 2002, the power supply system of the Shanghai Pudong Maglev Train Project began to supply power to the entire line, marking that the first maglev high-speed train operating line in China has met the conditions for system comprehensive commissioning. This maglev train commercial line, known as the “zero-altitude aircraft’’ Its total investment of RMB 8.9 billion.

Maglev Train Line

The Shanghai Maglev Train also encountered some difficulties and challenges during its construction and operation. First, the cost was too high, with each kilometer costing nearly 300 million yuan, resulting in serious losses. Second, the line was too short, only 30.5 kilometers, and the advantages of the maglev train could not be fully utilized. Third, there was a lot of social opposition, with some residents worried that the maglev train would have an impact on the surrounding environment and human health.

Therefore, the originally planned second phase of the Shanghai Maglev project (from Longyang Road to Hongqiao Airport) has not been implemented. Currently, the Shanghai Municipal Government is considering extending the maglev line to Hangzhou and connecting it with Hangzhou’s rail transit.  As a high-speed, low-energy, low-pollution, and high-safety means of transportation, maglev trains have important strategic significance and development prospects. They can not only improve transportation efficiency, shorten travel time, and promote regional economic and social development, but also reduce the impact on the environment, save energy resources, and enhance the country’s scientific and technological level and international competitiveness.

Unlike traditional wheel-rail trains, maglev trains use electromagnetic attraction or electric repulsion to overcome the vehicle’s gravity and generate guiding force when crossing a curve, float the train with electromagnetic force, and use a long-stator synchronous DC motor to supply electricity to the ground coil to drive the train at high speed, thus eliminating both the wheel and the rail and the pantograph, and achieving ground “flight” without touching the ground and without fuel, so it has the reputation of “ground plane” and “zero-altitude aircraft”.

The excellent performance of maglev trains, such as fast, low consumption, safety, comfort, economy and pollution-free, is also unmatched by traditional wheel-rail trains. In addition, low operating cost and energy consumption are another advantage. Due to the lack of wheels and friction, it saves 30% more electricity than the most advanced high-speed trains. Its magnetic field strength is very low, equivalent to the earth’s magnetic field, and much lower than household appliances. Because it is powered by electricity, it avoids the pollution caused by burning coal and oil along the way.

As the world’s first commercial high-speed maglev line, the Shanghai Maglev is a successful cooperation between China and Germany in the field of high technology, and an important breakthrough for China in maglev technology. It showcases China’s modern image, attracts the attention of many tourists and media at home and abroad, and enhances Shanghai’s city brand and international influence. The Shanghai Maglev Train also provides valuable experience and reference for China to develop more maglev lines in the future.

Maglev Train Shanghai

At present, China has built medium and low-speed maglev lines in Beijing, Changsha, Qingdao and other places, and is planning to build more high-speed maglev lines, such as the Shanghai-Hangzhou Super Maglev Project, which plans to use a high-speed maglev transportation system with a speed of 600 kilometers per hour to shorten the distance between Shanghai and Hangzhou to less than 20 minutes.

It starts from the south side of Longyang Station of Shanghai Metro Line 2 in the west and ends at the east side of the first phase terminal of Pudong International Airport in the east. The main line is 29.863 kilometers long, with a designed speed of 505 kilometers and an operating speed of 430 kilometers respectively.

In short, the Shanghai Maglev Train is a miracle of China’s high-speed transportation and a model of China’s scientific and technological innovation. It provides people with a fast, comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly way of travel, and also opens up new possibilities for the development of transportation in China and even the world.

In the vast ocean of science and technology, there are always some innovations that are like bright stars, leading the pace of the times. Among them, the Shanghai Maglev Train is undoubtedly the most dazzling pearl. It is not only a symbol of China’s speed, but also the holder of the top speed of land transportation in the world. It is certified by the Guinness World Records as the fastest commercially operated train in the world. Today, let us embark on this wonderful journey together, unveil the mystery of the Shanghai Maglev Train, and feel the shocking “China Speed”.

How did China get ahead of the Germans, who invented maglev railways, and become the first to take the lead in this field? Analysis from engineering and technical experts indicates that maglev trains, which can reach speeds of 500 kilometers per hour, are mainly ideal for long-distance, inter-city travel, and accommodating a large number of passengers.

In terms of the world, Germany and Japan are relatively small in area, while the United States has a particularly developed comprehensive transportation system. China is undoubtedly a fertile ground for the development of maglev railways. Therefore, China has become the first country in the world to take the lead, and has written a bold and colorful chapter in the history of world transportation.

Economic analysts believe that although the investment cost of the commercial line of maglev trains is 1.2 to 1.5 times that of high-speed wheel-rail, the cost is not a prominent disadvantage relative to its speed. In addition, the development of high-speed maglev railway systems will drive the development of many cutting-edge high-tech technologies. These high-tech technologies themselves will form emerging industries and play an important role in promoting economic development.

Buy your tickets and go: the perfect combination of speed and convenience.

The first step to embark on this journey is to buy tickets. Unlike the traditional train or subway ticket purchase method, the ticketing system of Shanghai Maglev Train is simple and efficient. One-way tickets are divided into ordinary tickets of 50 yuan and discounted tickets of 40 yuan for those who hold the same-day ticket. For travelers like me, choosing two round-trip tickets is naturally the most cost-effective option, a total of 160 yuan, which is easy to get. The ticket purchase process is quick, and the enthusiastic service of the staff makes people feel warm, as if foreshadowing that this will be an unusual travel experience.

Pit-in moment: seamless integration of technology and daily life.

The process of entering the station is exactly the same as that of a high-speed railway station or a subway station, with security checks and ticket checks, everything is in order. The difference is that here there is a sense of expectation and curiosity about future technology. As the gate opens gently, we officially step into the world of maglev trains. The interior design of the station is modern and simple, and every detail reveals the perfect combination of technology and art, making people look forward to the journey that is about to begin.

Maglev Train Shanghai Day View

Inside: the perfect balance of comfort and efficiency.

As you step into the carriage, you will be greeted by a sense of modernity. Although the overall layout is similar to that of a high-speed train, the details reveal the unique charm of the maglev train. The front and rear seats can be adjusted flexibly, and the design of six seats in a row not only ensures the comfort of passengers, but also makes full use of space resources. The design of the luggage rack is also considerate, whether it is a large suitcase or a backpack, you can find a suitable storage location. As the train slowly starts, a journey of speed and comfort officially begins.

Speeding experience: the ultimate interpretation of speed and passion.

At four o’clock, the train departed on time. From the moment it started, you could feel the amazing acceleration of the maglev train. Almost instantly, the number on the speedometer climbed to 130 kilometers per hour, and the scenery outside the window swept back at an astonishing speed. Along the way, you can clearly see the dense magnets on the rails, which are the secret weapon that drives this wheelless train. Using the principle that like magnets repel each other and opposite magnets attract each other, the maglev train has completely separated from the rails and galloped on the track in a suspended manner, forming a real “trackless train.”

As the train speed increases, the carriage is unusually stable, as if in a still space. Two minutes pass in a flash, and the train speed has steadily reached 300 kilometers per hour, but this is far from its limit. According to data, the maximum speed of the Shanghai Maglev Train can reach 500 kilometers per hour, which is enough to make any passenger feel unprecedented speed and passion.

Arriving at the destination: A vivid example of how technology changes our lives.

When the train slowly stopped at Shanghai Pudong Airport Station, the time stopped at seven minutes later. We couldn’t help but be surprised at how short the journey was. It used to take tens of minutes to get from Longyang Road Station to Pudong Airport, but now it only takes seven minutes. This is the miracle that technology has given us. After getting off the train, I was filled with awe and admiration for the maglev train technology, and I also deeply realized the true meaning of “technology changes life”.

Conclusion: Thumbs up for Chinese technology.

Looking back on this journey, the Shanghai Maglev Train not only demonstrates China’s outstanding achievements in the field of high-speed transportation, but also conveys a message to the world: scientific and technological innovation is an important force to promote social progress. As the famous saying goes, “Science and technology change life”, the success of the Shanghai Maglev Train is a vivid manifestation of China’s scientific and technological strength. Let us give a thumbs up to China’s scientific and technological innovation, and look forward to more such scientific and technological achievements in the future, bringing more convenience and surprises to our lives.

Equipment Overview:

Electromagnetic suspension is to generate a controllable electromagnetic field by exciting the on-board suspension electromagnet. The electromagnet and the stator core of the long stator linear motor on the track attract each other, sucking the train upward, and ensuring a stable suspension gap by controlling the suspension excitation current. The suspension gap between the electromagnet and the track is generally controlled at 8~10 mm.

Shanghai Maglev Train Vehicles:

Internal facilities:

The Shanghai Maglev Train is equipped with soft seats and LCD screens at the ends of the carriages, which display the current time and running speed. The carriages are equipped with stable 5G commercial terminals throughout the journey, and passengers can conduct mobile office, video conferencing, HD and UHD video, interactive games and other services on the train.

Vehicle facilities, Exterior facilities

The model of Shanghai Maglev Train is basically the same as that of Germany’s TR08 Maglev Train. It uses ordinary conductors to generate electromagnetic suspension and guiding forces, and uses long-stator linear synchronous motors for traction. There are 4 trains available for operation, with 3-5 carriages respectively, of which 1 is a domestically produced train. The trains can be divided into the first, the last and the middle cars.

They include a suspension frame and the electromagnets installed on it, a secondary suspension system and carriages. In addition, there are electrical equipment such as on-board batteries, emergency braking systems and suspension control systems. It can accommodate 959 people at a time, with the first car accommodating 52 people, the middle car accommodating 110 people per car, and the last car accommodating 78 people.

Orbital parameters:

The track is suspended 12 to 13 meters above the ground. The train test run on the Shanghai Maglev Train takes about 8 minutes to travel one way, with 80% of the sections exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, 60% exceeding 300 kilometers per hour, and 10 kilometers of ultra-high-speed sections exceeding 400 kilometers per hour.

The operation control system includes all equipment used for safety protection, control, execution and planning, as well as equipment used for communication between equipment. The operation control system consists of the operation control center, communication system, distributed control system and vehicle control system; the control center is located on the second floor of the Maglev Longyang Road Station.

Power supply system

The power supply system includes substations, power supply cables along the route, switch stations and other power supply equipment. The maglev train power supply system provides the electric energy required for train operation by supplying power to the long stator coils on the ground. First, AC high voltage electricity is introduced from the 110 kV public power grid, reduced to 20 kV and 1.5 kV through a step-down transformer, and then rectified into DC power, which is then converted into 0~300 Hz AC power by an inverter. After boosting, it is supplied to the long stator coils on the line through line cables and switch stations, forming traction between the stator and the on-board electromagnet.

On the ground there are all motor stator equipments, conversion, the rectification of maglav train system ,there are no confined requirments  on the weight, size  and vibration resistance of the equipment.

Shanghai Maglev Train Assembly Site

Milestones for Passenger Traffic

February 2003: The Shanghai Maglev Train carried 18,000 passengers over the first nine days of the Chinese New Year.

August 31, 2004, even while keeping this super strict safe distance of about 1.02 million kilometers (yeah, that sounds made-up, but it’s real), there were already 1.45 million folks hopping aboard. Fast-forward to March 2006, and the rail system had hauled 6.23 million passengers in total, rolling along for a wild 2.4 million kilometers without anything going sideways.

Then, October 1, 2007 hits, and—boom—daily numbers rocket past 20,000 for the first time. No biggie, just breaking records over here. Oh, and get this: the Shanghai Maglev Train? On September 5, 2017, it hit this massive milestone—50 million passengers. Fifty mil! Plus, the thing clocked up 16.88 million kilometers—safe and sound. I mean, can we get a round of applause for trains that actually get stuff done?
